Gaia Diotallevi comes from Rome, and before enrolling in the Ferrero Master, she completed both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Food Science and Human Nutrition at Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma. "My Master’s had a strong technological focus, and my thesis explored the temperature-dependent modulation of fructan metabolism in wheat," she tells us.
What was the main reason you chose the Ferrero Master’s Programme?
I chose the Ferrero Master’s Programme because it offers the perfect combination of academic excellence and real-world industry exposure. The collaboration with Ferrero, a company renowned for its innovation and global impact in the food sector, was particularly appealing. I wanted to deepen my knowledge in food science while also gaining practical skills that I could immediately apply in a professional context.
As you know, the approach involves teamwork, multitasking, and meeting tight deadlines. What do you think about these aspects? Which ones do you believe will be valuable for your professional career?
I thrive in dynamic environments, so I appreciate the emphasis on teamwork and multitasking. Working with diverse teams helps develop communication and collaboration skills, which are essential in any industry. Tight deadlines teach prioritization and time management, preparing me to handle the fast-paced nature of the food industry. These skills are not just practical but critical for success in research and development roles.
The Master’s Programme includes a close connection between university studies and company experience. What is your opinion on this?
I think this is one of the strongest aspects of the Ferrero Master’s Programme. Bridging academic studies with hands-on industry experience allows students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations. This approach makes learning more impactful and prepares us for the challenges we will face in our professional careers. It also helps build a network within the industry, which is invaluable for future opportunities.
Besides your studies, is there any other significant experience that has helped shape your professional path and future expectations?
Working at the FOSAN Foundation was pivotal in shaping my professional journey. I managed research projects like the FruFun Project, which focused on creating sustainable and innovative products from surplus fruit, and I gained experience in food education by designing workshops and games for schoolchildren. Additionally, my internship at Findus allowed me to understand the complexities of product development in an international setting. These experiences gave me a solid foundation in food science and innovation, as well as the adaptability needed for the industry.
Is there an agrifood topic, perhaps among those you are studying, that you find particularly interesting, and why?
I am particularly interested in sustainable food systems and the development of functional foods, especially for athletes. My background in sports nutrition and passion for innovation have driven my interest in creating products that combine health benefits with sustainability. I believe these areas represent the future of the food industry, balancing consumer needs with environmental responsibility.
What do you think your professional opportunities will be after completing the Master’s Programme?
I believe the Master’s Programme will open doors to exciting opportunities in research and development within the agrifood industry. The skills, knowledge, and network I gain here will prepare me for leadership roles in creating innovative and sustainable food products, potentially with a global reach.
