«My name is Sara Chiari, I am 24 years old, and I am from Cremona. During my academic journey, I pursued a bachelor’s degree in Food Science and Technology, followed by a Master’s degree in Food Processing, Innovation and Tradition at the Catholic University of Cremona. This master's programme provided me with the valuable opportunity to collaborate with students from all over the world, and I was able to expand my knowledge not only in the technological aspects of the food industry but also in areas such as packaging and the various materials used. I gained valuable insights into the food business, as well as a solid understanding of the essential legislation concerning food safety and regulations».
What was the main reason you chose the Master Ferrero Programme?
In the second year of my Master’s programme, I had the incredible opportunity to be part of the Ferrero family for six months, working on the development of my thesis project. The focus of my research was the creation of a plant-based chocolate using tiger nut as an innovative ingredient. Not only does tiger nut enhance the flavor of the chocolate, but it also enriches it with both macro- and micronutrients. Furthermore, it has the potential to delay the phenomenon of blooming, which is of critical importance, particularly from a consumer perspective. I am deeply passionate about the food industry and its potential to innovate and meet the evolving demands of consumers worldwide. My academic background, with two degrees in Food Science and Technology, combined with my hands-on experience in Research and Development at Ferrero, has provided me with a solid foundation in both the scientific and practical aspects of the food sector. The Ferrero Master Programme presented a unique opportunity for me to further enhance my skills, broaden my professional horizons, and contribute to the company’s ongoing legacy of excellence.
As you know, the approach involves teamwork, multitasking, and meeting tight deadlines. What do you think about these aspects? Which ones do you believe will be valuable for your professional career?
I strongly believe that teamwork, multitasking, and the ability to meet tight deadlines are crucial skills in today’s fast-paced and dynamic work environment, especially within the food industry. Throughout my academic journey and my six-month research and development experience at Ferrero, I have developed a strong understanding of how essential collaboration and effective time management are to achieving innovative and high-quality results.
The Master Programme includes a close connection between university studies and company experience. What is your opinion of this?
I believe that the integration of university studies with hands-on company experience is one of the most effective ways to develop both the theoretical and practical skills necessary for success in any profession, particularly in the food industry. Having completed my academic journey in Food Science and Technology, I recognize the importance of a solid academic foundation. However, I also understand that theory alone is not sufficient to address the complex challenges faced by companies in a dynamic market environment. The fact that the Master's degree gives us the opportunity, through the business case, to enter the real world of the company, understand its dynamics, and get to know professional figures is an extremely important aspect and a way to put ourselves to the test.
Besides your studies, is there any other significant experience that has helped to shape your professional path and future expectations?
In addition to my academic studies, one of the most significant experiences that has shaped my professional path was my six-month internship in Research and Development at Ferrero. This hands-on experience allowed me to apply my theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting, and more importantly, it exposed me to the innovative and collaborative culture that Ferrero fosters. Working in such a renowned company gave me a deeper understanding of how product development, consumer needs, sustainability, and business strategy are interwoven in the food industry. It also reinforced my passion for pursuing a career focused on innovation and quality in food science.
Is there an agrifood topic, perhaps among those you are studying, that you find particularly interesting, and why?
One agrifood topic that I find particularly fascinating is sustainability in food production, specifically how innovative technologies can be leveraged to reduce food waste, improve resource efficiency, enhance the environmental footprint of food products, and the interest in new raw materials, especially plant-based ones, that could be used to produce new products that are more sustainable and healthier. This topic is of great personal interest to me, as it aligns with my academic background in Food Science and Technology, as well as my experiences in Research and Development at Ferrero.
What do you think your professional opportunities will be after completing the Master’s Programme?
One of the key areas I see myself pursuing is in product innovation and development. My passion for creating high-quality, sustainable food products, along with my experience in research and development, positions me well for roles in product formulation, R&D strategy, or product management. I envision working in an environment where I can contribute to developing cutting-edge food solutions, focusing on sustainability, nutrition, and consumer trends. In addition, I am particularly drawn to leadership positions within the food industry, where I could guide cross-functional teams, drive innovation, and influence the strategic direction of product development.
Anyway, this Master gives us the opportunity to grow and discover other different areas related to innovation, like food law or food marketing, so I will learn as much as possible to be prepared for other sectors that I may encounter once I finish the Master.
What is your opinion on Cremona and the Unicatt Santa Monica campus?
Cremona is my city, so I know Cremona very well. For sure, the fact that the city is not so big helps foreign students to easily reach the faculty on foot or by public transport without problems.
Santa Monica is a new, modern building with different spaces and places both where you can study and where you can meet and have fun with friends. I find that, having lived on the previous campus, there is a light air in this one, where you can feel part of something common and fully experience university life.
