From Alessandria to Master Ferrero: Flavia Fiumara shares her experience. «For my academic journey, I pursued a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences at Uniupo Alessandria. Later, I continued my studies with a master’s degree in food, Health, and Environment at Uniupo in Vercelli. Beyond my primary academic path, I attended additional courses to broaden my knowledge and skill set. For instance, I participated as an auditor in a master’s program on Economy, Innovation, Communication, and Hospitality for the Tourist Enterprise. I also completed a course on the exploitation of regional resources and gastronomic excellence, focusing on strategies and techniques of communication and marketing. This course was organized by the “SoloPerGian” foundation in collaboration with IULM and UCSC universities».
What was the main reason you chose the Master Ferrero Program?
I was drawn to the Master Ferrero Program because it offers a unique chance to contribute to the future of food science through innovation and interdisciplinary research. This aligns seamlessly with my career ambitions, which focus on bridging the gap between scientific research and practical applications within the food industry. I am particularly inspired by the opportunity to collaborate with a team passionate about sustainability and cutting-edge solutions in food science. The program provides the perfect environment to grow professionally and make a meaningful impact on the industry.
As you know, the approach involves teamwork, multitasking, and meeting tight deadlines. What do you think about these aspects? Which ones do you believe will be valuable for your professional career?
I believe these aspects are essential for personal and professional growth, and they align well with my personality and work ethic. Teamwork fosters collaboration and diverse perspectives, while multitasking hones efficiency and adaptability—both of which are invaluable skills in today’s fast-paced industries. Meeting tight deadlines challenges my determination and time management abilities, pushing me to deliver my best under pressure. I am confident these experiences will significantly contribute to my professional career and enhance my ability to work in dynamic environments.
The Master Program includes a close connection between university studies and company experience. What is your opinion of this?
I see this integration as a fantastic opportunity to refine my skills and prepare for the demands of working in a large company. It allows me to apply the theoretical knowledge I’ve gained from academia in a practical, real-world setting. This hands-on experience is invaluable, as it bridges the gap between academic learning and professional application, providing insights into the challenges and rewards of working in the food industry.
Besides your studies, is there any other significant experience that has helped shape your professional path and future expectations?
Yes, my time as a research fellow was particularly transformative. During this period, I discovered my passion for research and the thrill of uncovering new knowledge. However, I realized that research alone wasn’t enough for me. I want to go beyond discovery to actively create and develop products that embody my passion, knowledge, and values. My goal is to contribute to innovations that are not only beneficial to the community but also sustainable for the environment.
Is there an agrifood topic, perhaps among those you are studying, that you find particularly interesting, and why?
As someone with a background in biology, my studies have been comprehensive, but I’ve developed a specialization in nutrition. Nutrition remains a field close to my heart, but I am increasingly intrigued by food technology. This area provides an opportunity to deepen my expertise, offering practical tools and innovative approaches to address challenges in the food industry. I see food technology as a perfect complement to my nutrition studies, enabling me to deliver holistic solutions.
What do you think your professional opportunities will be after completing the Master’s Program?
I am immensely grateful for this opportunity, as it equips me with critical hands-on training and industry insights. After completing the program, I aspire to become a well-rounded food scientist capable of driving innovation in the field. I am eager to leverage my skills, knowledge, and passion to contribute meaningfully to advancements in food science, particularly in areas like sustainability, product development, and nutritional innovation.
